175 million years ago there existed a continent by the name of Pangaea and of course over the next 175 million years it broke up into the seven continents that we know today. The continents were split up into two main regions: the Old and New World. The Old World consisted of Africa, Europe, and Asia (Afro- Eurasia), while the New World consisted of North and South America (The Americas). Over the course of those 175 years these two regions are going to grow up differently, ecologically and evolutionarily until 1492 during the early modern era when Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas accidentally when looking for a route to India in order to trade for spices. Before 1942, before The Columbian Exchange, we could not talk about a world history at all. The Columbian Exchange was mainly the widespread transfer of disease, animals, and plants from both the Old and New world. The effects of this event were major and not always intentional.
